Green Michigan is rolling out the first advanced composting course in August 2026 in partnership with Hackley Library and the Muskegon Farmers Market.
This composting course and certification build on the composting pilot that operates at the Muskegon Farmers Market, thanks to generous support from the Environmental Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Residents, market vendors, and visitors can use the market's composting bins to compost food scraps and compostable packaging 24/7 through a convenient drop-off pilot program. Green Michigan is piloting this program in hopes of expanding it throughout Muskegon County. We would love for you to learn with us and grow with us. We also need you, and could you use help.
For the Advanced Composting Course, we have split the trainings across a handful of Saturdays, with a volunteer component that allows you to be a part of your community while learning the important aspects of composting. We also plan to take a field trip to a nearby site for a guided tour.

Is this course like a Master Composting Course?
Yes! Words matter. This course is the same format as that style course; however, we wanted to make the course more inclusive and welcoming, and like many other industries, we are phasing out the term.
How does the scholarship work?
We will not ask you to prove that you need a scholarship; we simply have a few available, and they are first-come, first-served. We do not want cost to be a barrier to participation.
What if I cannot participate in person?
At this time, the course is only available in person. We will likely offer a virtual version of this course over the winter months.
